Alone: The Challenge of Working from Home
Although work from home offers us various benefits and opportunities, it also comes with certain responsibilities and challenges. Those challenges are mostly internal, dealing with one’s self, like motivation, discipline, work attitude, professionalism, etc. However, one of the biggest challenges of someone working from home is the feeling of isolation this kind of job brings. Simply put, if you’re not used to work by yourself and you’re the type of person who enjoys the company of your colleagues and your bosses, you’ll find it hard to adjust to that feeling of isolation that comes along with work from home.
Being isolated from the office environment may or may not be a big deal for a person. That depends on his personality and behavior coupled by his mindset and range of understanding. But if he wants to succeed with his work from home, he has to deal with this challenge one way or the other.
Socialization is part and parcel of our personality as human beings. We just can’t help but to socialize and keep up with the community. Working from home decreases our chances to enhance our social aspect and that’s because we work alone, with little or no interaction from the outside world. The only contacts we may have are from members of our family and from some occasional visits by our friends or relatives. That feeling of missing the times when you can talk to someone at the other side of the cubicle, having small chats and laughs during coffee breaks and being able to attend or participate in office meetings or parties will surely creep up once in a while. But you know you have to suck it up and not let it distract you from your ultimate goal. Remember that you’re here to have a productive work from home. If this is what it takes to achieve that, then you know this challenge won’t be able to shake or break you.
There are several ways to overcome this obstacle and since this challenge came from yourself, the solution must start within yourself too. You know you need to lessen that feeling of isolation or being alone. You can do that by taking part in some online groups. There are also plenty of social networks and online forums to join and explore. Your instant messenger can also be a great tool in helping you stay in touch with your social circle.
Well, that’s basically it. If you can’t socialize face-to-face, then do it online. Nonetheless, if that is still not enough for you to shake off this feeling of isolation, you might want to start rethinking about pursuing work from home. You know that this challenge is a mere sacrifice that you have to make but if you think it’s not worth it, you can always settle finding another line of work that allows you to enjoy your social life to the fullest.
