Treat Your Forums Like How You Would Treat Your Community
Almost everybody enjoys being a member of the community where you can share stuff, help each other and just be there when the going gets tough. There is no perfect community but members can strive to make it as livable as possible. Well, if you work from home and part of your marketing campaign is to participate in forums, you should know that you will do well in that task if you remember to treat the online forums that you are a member of like a community.
Come to think of it. Those forums are already considered online communities because people that join in it share common thoughts and interests. Some even consider it as their second family. The point here is that you should treat these forums like how you would treat your community. For instance, if you think you are not happy or satisfied with the community you are living in and if the people there gives you the creeps, isn’t it best to just leave and find another one than complain how creepy or frustrating your community is but still live there? That can be applied to online forums as well. If you feel that the forum is a huge joke and think the people there are jerks, why stay and complain? You won’t be doing any good to that forum and you certainly won’t be doing great for yourself either.
Another thing you should keep in mind is that you should be able to contribute to these online forums you have joined in and to participate actively in threads and discussions. Imagine someone in your neighborhood who shies away from everybody, talks to no one and hides in his/her house the whole time but is closely watching anyone that passes by from his window. You are doing the same thing if you are just lurking around the forum and not joining in any discussion or conversation. This is your online community. Therefore, you should contribute to make it better in any way possible. Help other members. Provide answers to their questions. Talk about stuff and you can also ask something that you need answers or clarifications from. Just participate actively at anything going on in there. Remember that there are online forums that delete members who have been inactive for a long period of time. If that happens, it’s not going to help you and your work from home that much.
Some more points for you to ponder is when you avoid being a troll to others. Try not to bully any member especially the newbies. That won’t do your work from home and your marketing efforts as well any good. You
are just digging your grave when you are doing that. Isn’t it enough that we already have hundreds or even millions of trolls out there? Don’t add to that already long list.
Lastly, since you got yourself wound up in these online forums, it’s within your discretion then whether to continue with those forums or not. The point here is that if it’s damn too easy to sign up with these sites, it’s also that easy to erase your account or stop posting. Don’t force yourself to participate if you don’t want to. This just creates poison inside the forum and that’s not good for your work from home as well. Do you want to intoxicate your community?
